We've been busy in local communities and schools, teaching how to stay safe and be responsible on the roads these holidays. Your child may have learned about keeping safe with Tom and Dinosaur in school on how to stay safe when out and about. Resources are available for your school on road safety at holiday time. So, if they haven't already, ask your child's teacher to jump online and use the free materials before the holiday break.

What your child will learn

In the "Hold my Hand" resources, your child will learn how:

to be road safe and alert during the school holiday period
to stay safe by cooperating with mum and dad.

They may have watched an animation and completed a take home activity to discuss with you before and during any trips you take these school holidays. If your child's school has not yet participated, you can still do all of the activities online as a family at home. How you can keep your child safe these holidays

Always hold your child's hand when walking near roads and traffic until they are 10 years old.
If your hands are full, ask older children to hold onto your arm, clothing, bag, trolley or pram. If they are younger, put them in a trolley or pram.
Explain to your child that if you are not around it is still important that they hold a trusted adult's hand. For example, a grandparent, nanny, older teenage brother or sister, or another carer.
When walking, stay on the footpath and away from the road.
Stop, look and listen before you cross the road. Look left and right and wait for cars to come to a complete stop before you cross the road.
Always supervise your child closely when they are riding a bike or scooter.
Ensure Your child always wear a correctly fitted helmet when riding
Make sure your child plays and rides in places away from vehicles, roads and driveways.
Dress your child in bright coloured clothing when riding so people can see them.
Look out for cars moving out of driveways when walking and riding.
Lead by example and cross the road at the safest place. For example, at traffic lights or pedestrian crossings.
Point out that roads can look different when on holidays in different areas, road safety is still important.

Did you know?

Children under 10:

Have limited peripheral vision, so they may not see cars coming.
Have slower physical reflexes, so they may not respond if you call out to stop.
Find it difficult to react to a sudden change in traffic conditions.
Cannot predict the origin of sound and use it as a measure of distance.
Cannot see the roadway in its entirety and make safe choices.
May be confused if roads on holiday don't look the same as roads at home.

Three things to remember these holidays:

Holiday time is for relaxing our minds and bodies, not our road safety vigilance!
Children's reaction times are different to ours, always hold your child's hand around roads up to the age of 10.
Your child looks to you to copy behaviour. Always role model the safest practices around roads.
